ONDC’s work is growing rapidly, with several lakh traders on-boarded so far.

The state-owned e-commerce network ONDC has so far managed to connect around 1.5 lakh merchants to its network. This becomes important in the context that a few months ago in January only 800 merchants were associated with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).

The number of traders has increased so much.

ONDC Chief Executive T Koshy gave this information in a recent interview. He told Mint that in January, where only 800 traders were associated with ONDC, now their number has reached 1.5 lakh. In January, there were only 50 transactions per day and they were mainly for grocery and food orders. Currently, around 90,000 auto and taxi drivers are among the merchants connected to the network.

ONDC is being described as the UPI for the e-commerce sector. It was also expected to face competition from online food ordering platforms like Zomato and Swiggy, as well as e-commerce giants like Amazon-Flipkart and app-based cab aggregators like Ola-Uber. These assumptions are proving to be wrong though, as this network is not a competitor but an aggregator. ONDC initially got a lot of buzz about cheaper food ordering compared to Zomato and Swiggy.

Tomatoes are available at cheap prices.

Speaking recently, ONDC also relieved the public about the skyrocketing prices of tomatoes. In Delhi-NCR, ONDC along with NCCF and other government organizations have made tomatoes available to people at low cost. Even now, people in Delhi-NCR can buy tomatoes from ONDC at cheaper prices. At the time, CEO Koshi had said that the move would help them onboard new customers on ONDC.

Delivery has started in many cities.

The Chief Executive of ONDC said that the network has expanded rapidly in the last 6 months. Now, ONDC delivers to more than 620 cities of the country. He said that ONDC is getting help in adoption of mobility services.

Started last year

This network is supported by Department of Industrial Promotion and Internal Trade i.e. DPIIT. Any e-commerce platform can connect with ONDC. In a way, it acts as an aggregate for e-commerce companies. Its pilot project started on April 29 last year and the beta phase started from September 30.
