Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana: Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana was launched by the central government to connect every citizen to the banking system. Through this scheme, crores of people have availed the benefit of government schemes by opening a zero balance account. It has been 9 years since the scheme was launched but still the number of beneficiaries is increasing continuously. According to a report published in the Financial Times, 3.59 crore people across the country have opened new PMJDY accounts under this scheme in FY 2023. Notably, a total of over 1 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened in the first four months of FY 2023.

Along with this, a total of 2.86 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened during FY 2022. Talking about FY 2021, 3.87 crore new accounts were opened during this period. In such a situation, the number of beneficiaries of this scheme has increased to 49.63 crore by July 2023. On the other hand, if we talk about deposits as compared to accounts, a marginal increase of Rs 4000 crore has been recorded in this quarter. In such a situation, the total amount of this scheme has now increased to Rs 2.03 lakh crore. At the same time, as of March 2023, the figure was Rs 1.99 lakh crore. In this case, it has recorded an increase of Rs.4000 crore.
Most Jan Dhan accounts are opened in public sector banks.
Public sector banks are leading the way in opening PM Jan Dhan accounts. As of March 2021, the number of Jan Dhan accounts in public sector banks across the country was 33.26 crore, which has increased to 38.58 crore in May 2023. In this situation, the number of PMJDY accounts in public sector banks has increased by 16% in the last two years. At the same time, the number of government-backed Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) has grown by 21 percent from 7.1 crore accounts to 9.1 crore accounts. At the same time, between March 2021 and May 2023, only 12 per cent growth was recorded in the number of Jan Dhan accounts in private sector banks.
What is Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana?
Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana was launched by the central government on 28 August 2014 to connect every individual of the country to the banking system. Under this scheme you can open zero balance savings account in any bank. All account holders get the benefit of a free RuPay debit card and an insurance cover of up to Rs 2 lakh. Along with this, the beneficiaries also get an overdraft facility of up to Rs.10,000. Through these accounts, the government transfers money to crores of people across the country through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) for various schemes like PM Kisan Scheme, PM Crop Insurance Yojana etc.
