New Delhi: Quoting Lord Ram, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said that the promise made by Indians to the original inhabitants of Jammu and Kashmir in 1947 is under trial in the Supreme Court. The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir said that the matter which the Supreme Court is hearing is related to the people of India. He said, ‘This country cannot be run on majoritarianism. This country will run according to the constitution. He also said that the issue of abrogation of Article 370 is linked to the promise made in 1947 to the people of India and the original inhabitants of Kashmir.

‘We still have faith in the Supreme Court’

Mufti said, ‘We know what has happened to the country’s institutions. The good thing is that we still have some faith in the Supreme Court of this country. I want to appeal to them that the country believes in the principle of ‘raghu kal rat sada chali aye, pran jai par bachan na jai’. I am not talking about those who kill in the name of ‘Jayshree Ram’ and lynching in the name of ‘Jayshree Ram’. I am talking about the majority section of people who believe in ‘Ramchandraji’, his promise ‘Raghu Kal Raat Sada Chili Aaye, Pran Jai Par Bachan Na Jai’. So I think Watchen faces a test in the Supreme Court today.

‘Many Kashmiri Pandits have left the valley in 5 years’

The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said it was up to the Supreme Court and Indian citizens to see whether the country would go according to the constitution or “according to the divisive agenda of a particular party”. Mufti said he was satisfied that the court did not accept the Centre’s contention that the situation in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir had improved after the abrogation of the provisions of Article 370. Mufti claimed that many Kashmiri Pandits were forced to leave the Valley in the last 5 years. He said that the central government has claimed that it has ended terrorism in Kashmir, but the army has done it.

Mufti made serious allegations against the central government

Mufti alleged that the Center has ruined Jammu and Kashmir in the name of ending terrorism. When Pakistan invaded Jammu and Kashmir in 1947, the unarmed locals fought the invaders with the help of the Indian Army. When Mufti reached the Supreme Court, Chief Justice D.Y. A five-judge bench headed by Chandrachud heard the arguments of senior advocate Rajeev Dhawan, appearing for the PDP. On August 2, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had come to the Supreme Court and said that he expected justice from it like any other Indian citizen.

The hearing on the petitions began on August 2.

Let us tell you that on August 2, the Supreme Court started hearing the petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 which granted special status to the then state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Center had issued a notification on 5 August 2019 abrogating Article 370, ending the special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. A number of petitions challenging the repeal of Article 370 and provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019 were referred to a Constitution Bench in 2019. These petitions have challenged the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. (language)
