ITR Filing: The last date for filing income tax returns in the country is 31st July 2023 and this year also crores of taxpayers have paid their taxes by the last day of July. There are several states in the country that have been at the forefront of filing income tax returns. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and West Bengal are the top 5 states in paying taxes.

According to Livemint, these states accounted for 48% of the total income tax returns filed in 2023. This information has been given in the State Bank of India report. The report also states that there is a significant number of taxpayers in the country who have moved from the lower income group to the higher income group.

In which five states saw the highest growth.

Overall, 64 lakh more ITRs have been filed in 2023 compared to assessment year 2022. Under this maximum income tax returns are filed in Maharashtra. It is followed by Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan respectively. On the other hand, in terms of growth, smaller states like Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland have registered a 20% increase in ITR filings over the last 9 years.

The SBI report also revealed that by the year 2047, the annual income level of the middle class will reach Rs 50 lakh. SBI has brought out this report titled ‘Deciphering Emerging Trends in ITR Filing’ on the emerging trends and changes in ITR filing in the country and the ongoing changes in the tax system in India. 6.77 crore income tax returns were filed.

Earlier, the Income Tax Department said that a record 6.77 crore income tax returns have been filed for the year 2023-24 and as on July 31, 2023, the number of first-time income tax return taxpayers stands at 53.67 lakh.
