A case has been registered against a man in Maharashtra’s Thane district under various sections, including rape, for marrying a 27-year-old woman by hiding her real identity, forcibly converting her to Islam and then giving her triple talaq. Police gave this information on Wednesday. The accused has been identified as Raju alias Siraj Qureshi, a resident of Bhiwandi and has not been arrested yet, a police official said. According to the FIR, the victim had separated from her husband in 2018 and was raising her and her seven-year-old daughter. The woman befriended the accused through social media in 2019 and told him her name was Raju. Raju told the woman that he owned a hotel in Bhiwandi and offered to marry her.

The man allegedly raped the woman at a lodge in 2020. Citing the FIR, the officer said that on January 26, 2020, he married the woman as per Hindu customs. After a year of marriage, the accused told the woman that his real name was Siraj Qureshi and asked the woman to convert to Islam if she wanted to live with him. The woman agreed to his request and the couple remarried last May according to Islamic rites, the FIR said.

“In May this year, Qureshi told the woman that he was already married with four children and if he continued the relationship, he would lose his share in his ancestral property,” the officer said. Then he divorced the woman three times. The woman complained to the police, after which Qureshi was booked under sections 420 (cheating), 376 (rape), 506 (intimidation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as a Muslim woman (guardian at marriage).
