Mumbai: Big news related to Kopardi gang rape case in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra has come out. One of the accused in this case, Jitendra alias Pappu Shinde, committed suicide in Pune’s Yerwada Jail. Sources said that Shinde committed suicide by hanging. His body was found hanging in the barracks this morning. When the prison officials went to round up the gang, they saw him and he was taken down. After the incident came to light, all senior officers are reaching Yerwada Jail.
What’s the whole deal?
On July 13, 2016, a minor belonging to the Maratha community of Kopardi village in Ahmednagar district was raped and murdered by three men, sparking massive protests across the state. Jitender alias Pappu Shinde was the main accused in this case. The gravity of this crime can be gauged from the fact that a 15-year-old girl who was returning home after meeting her grandfather was gang-raped and strangled to death by some people. Before that, the accused also broke his hands and legs.
In September 2016, the police arrested three Dalit youths, identified as Jitendra Shinde, Santosh Bhawal and Nitin Bhilome, in the case. In September 2016, the Maratha Kranti Morcha took out silent marches in different parts of the state, demanding early completion of the trial and punishment of the accused, besides demanding reservation for Marathas across the state. The police had filed a charge sheet of over 350 pages in the case in the local sessions court on November 1, 2016. In this case, the court sentenced the three accused to life imprisonment.
