Feroze Gandhi Birthday Special: Today is the birthday of Feroze Gandhi, husband of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Feroze was born in 1912 in Mumbai. He was a Congress Member of Parliament and a politician as well as a journalist. The stories of her and Indira Gandhi’s marriage are still quite famous in history because Indira Gandhi’s father and India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru did not want Indira and Feroze to get married. But who can stop love stories from reaching fulfillment? This marriage took place and this love story was forever immortalized in the history of India.

How did Gandhi come in the name of Feroze Sir?

Feroze Gandhi’s original name was Feroze Gandhi and his father Jahangir Gandhi hailed from Bharuch, Gujarat, and belonged to a Parsi family. Feroze’s mother’s name was Ratimai Ghandi. Feroze’s father was a marine engineer by profession. After his father’s death, Feroze first lived with his mother in Mumbai, later coming to Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in 1915. In the book ‘Feroz the Forgotten Gandhi’ by a famous Swedish author Bertal Faulk, it is also mentioned that Feroz Gandhi was born in a Parsi family in Bombay and his father’s name was Jahangir Firdousji Gandhi.

But the question is, how did Feroze Gandhi become Feroze Gandhi? According to Birtle Faulk’s book ‘Feroz the Forgotten Gandhi’, when Feroze became active in politics, his name was confused with Gandhi (Gandhi) in the newspapers of that time and this name started to be printed. Since then Feroze’s name stuck with Gandhi like a shadow that never went away. However, many historians have different opinions about this. Some believe that Feroz changed his name to Gandhi after being inspired by Mahatma Gandhi.

Feroze was a Parsi, as confirmed by the fact that his grave is in a Parsi cemetery in Prayagraj. This tomb is in Mumfordganj area of Prayagraj. Yet this propaganda is spread on social media that Feroze was a Muslim.

How did Indira Gandhi’s love story begin?

The love story of Feroze and Indira has been quite famous. In fact, Indira’s mother Kamala Nehru fainted while protesting in front of a college and Feroze Gandhi took great care of her. Meanwhile Feroze started going to her house to inquire about Kamala’s well-being. This is where Feroze and Indra came close.

It was the year 1933, when 21-year-old Feroze proposed to 16-year-old Indira. However, Indra flatly refused this proposal. Time passed and Feroze became active in politics. After that there came a time when Indira and Feroze became close again and both decided to get married.

However, Indira’s father, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, was against the marriage as they both had different religions and their politics could be influenced by it. In such a situation, Mahatma Gandhi explained to Nehru and gave his surname ‘Gandhi’ to Feroze as a title. After that Feroze and Indra got married according to Hindu customs.

Feroze was alone at the last stage of life.

Due to his critical attitude towards his government, Feroze’s relationship with his father-in-law Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was not very cordial. This also affected his relationship with Indira Gandhi and there came a time when Feroze and Indira Gandhi started living separately. When Feroze was at the last stage of his life, he was completely alone. He had his first heart attack in 1958 and his second in 1960. Feroz bid farewell to this world at the age of 47.
