The ruling BJP, however, rejected the allegations, saying that the dam, located near Ekta Nagar in Narmada district, overflowed with water in just 36 hours.

The Congress party in Gujarat on Monday alleged that the flood-like situation in parts of Bharuch district was due to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s wish to felicitate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday.

The Congress said the BJP suddenly released water from the Sardar Sarovar Dam into the Narmada river on September 17, when the water was supposed to be released gradually. The ruling BJP, however, rejected the allegations, saying that the dam, located near Ekta Nagar in Narmada district, overflowed with water in just 36 hours.

This forced the authorities to release 18 lakh cusecs of water on September 17 (Modi’s birthday). For the first time this monsoon, the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River reached 138.68 meters water level (FRL) on Sunday morning, September 17.

Authorities then had to open 23 out of 30 gates to release excess water from catchment areas in neighboring Madhya Pradesh. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupinder Patel reached Ektanagar on Sunday morning and welcomed the water by performing puja at the dam. The Chief Minister also congratulated Modi on his birthday.
