Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is in the process of reactivating the Vikram lander and Pragyaan rover, which successfully landed on the moon. Lander Vikram and rover Pragyan are currently at the South Pole of the Moon after successfully completing their mission. ISRO had put both instruments into sleep mode as the lunar night began on September 3-4. But will Vikram Lander and Pragyan Rover be able to work again? Will ISRO be able to activate it? How are Vikram and Pragyan now?

After landing on the moon on August 23, Chandrayaan 3’s Vikram lander and Pragyan rover are currently at the moon’s south pole. Both instruments completed their explorations without any hitches and transmitted all the data back to Earth. After about 13 days of research, ISRO put Vikram and Pragyan in deep sleep mode on the moon. However, Vikram Lander’s receiver was kept on to restore contact with Earth.

Why was it put into sleep mode?

The reason for keeping the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover in sleep mode is because of the night on the moon. Chandrayaan 3 was landed on the south pole of the Moon when there was sunlight. We tell you that when one part of the moon receives sunlight for 14 days, the other part remains in darkness for 14 days. The temperature in the dark side drops to -150 to 200 degrees Celsius. Vikram lander and Pragyan rover cannot operate in such temperature. The rover lander can generate electricity in sunlight but not in the dark.

Will Vikram and Pragyan be able to activate?

ISRO had left the batteries of both the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover fully charged before putting them into sleep mode. However, the battery may gradually discharge as the temperature drops. However, you may also recall that ISRO did another soft landing of the Vikram lander before putting it into sleep mode and repositioning it. After that, all payloads of the lander were switched off and the receiver was switched on so that it could be re-commanded from Bengaluru. In such a case, Vikram and Pragyan were kept at a place where after sunrise the sunlight falls on his solar panel and charges his battery. If the batteries are charged, ISRO can reactivate them and deploy them on missions and send more information back to Earth.

What do the experts say?

Asked about the reactivation of the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover, former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair said that Vikram and Pragyan have been in sleep mode for about 2 weeks. It’s like taking something out of the freezer and trying to use it. He said that the temperature on the moon will remain below minus 150 degrees Celsius. How batteries, electronics and devices survive at these temperatures is a real concern. Nair said that such tests were undoubtedly conducted on the ground to enable them to be reactivated. Solar heat can heat up devices and battery chargers. If both of these tasks are successfully performed, there is a good chance that the system can be reactivated. Once Vikram and Pragyan are operational, it is possible that we will be able to travel further in the next 14 days and collect other data near the Moon’s south pole.

K Sivan also gave a statement.

Former ISRO chairman K Sivan has also spoken about the Vikram lander and Pragyan rover. “We have to wait,” he said. Vikram and Pragyan have passed through the lunar night and now the lunar day has begun. So an attempt will be made to enable them. If all systems work, all will be well. This is not the end, there will be many new science to come. There are still many discoveries to be made from Chandrayaan-1 data, Sivan said. So I expect many new things to come. Scientists will keep trying. So, this is not the end of the story.
