President Draupadi Murmu and Sonia Gandhi attended Dussehra events, PM Modi also performed Ravan Dahan.

New Delhi. President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Congress President Sonia Gandhi and several other leaders participated in various Dussehra events in Delhi on Tuesday. Dussehra is celebrated after the end of Navratri. Effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakaran are burnt on this day to symbolize the victory of good over evil. President Murmu attended the Dussehra program organized by the Shri Dharmak Leela Samiti at the grounds in front of the Red Fort here, while Prime Minister Modi attended a function at Dwarka. Shri Dharmak Leela Samiti has been organizing Ram Leela programs in the city since 1924. President Murmu reached the venue around 6 pm and offered prayers along with the committee members. Former Union Minister Harsh Vardhan was also with Murmu. He was later given a bow and arrow with which he symbolically shot and burned the leaves.

The organizers gave a traditional welcome to Prime Minister Modi at the function held in Dwarka. Meanwhile, a large number of people were eagerly waiting to see ‘Lanka Dahan’. Modi was welcomed wearing a shawl. He was also presented with an idol of Ram Darbar and a mace. He shot an arrow using a ceremonial bow, thus beginning the burning of Lanka. In his address, Modi said that this is a festival that symbolizes the victory of humility over ego. The Prime Minister said that Vijaya Dashmi is the festival of resolutions and repeating our resolutions. He also mentioned the construction of a new Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi attended Dussehra festival program near Red Fort here. He participated in the Dussehra festival held at the Nav Shri Religious Leela Committee Ground. Senior Congress leader Jaiprakash Agarwal and some other people were present on the occasion. Gandhi was gifted with a copy of the Ramayana amid chants of Jai Shri Ram at the program, Gandhi applied Tilak of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. After that the Ravana Dahan program was completed. Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also participated in the Dussehra programs organized by various Ramlila committees near the Red Fort.
