After the upheaval, the stock market closed in the green, with mid-cap and small-cap stocks continuing to rise.

Stock market close on 5 January 2024: The last trading session of the week saw huge volatility in the Indian stock market. The morning market started with a great boom. Especially mid-cap and small-cap stocks saw good buying. But the market started trading in the red due to selling during the afternoon trading session. However, at the close of business, the market recovered from the lows and closed in the green. The BSE Sensex closed at 72026 points, a jump of 178 points above the 72,000 mark. Meanwhile, the National Stock Exchange’s Nifty closed at 21,170 points with a jump of 52 points.

State of the sector

The biggest gains in today’s trade were seen in IT stocks. Apart from this, stocks of auto, energy, infra, consumer durable, oil and gas sectors closed in the green. At the same time, shares of banking, pharma, FMCG, metals, healthcare sectors closed lower. Mid-cap index and small-cap index stocks have risen. Out of 30 stocks in the Sensex, 18 stocks closed with gains and 12 stocks closed with losses. While, out of 50 stocks in Nifty, 25 stocks closed higher and 25 closed lower.

Market cap at record high

Market cap of BSE-listed stocks closed at record high due to market rally. According to BSE data, the stock of listed companies touched Rs 369.23 lakh crore, up from Rs 368.43 lakh crore in the previous trading session. Market capitalization has seen a jump of Rs 80,000 crore in today’s trade.
