General elections in Pakistan will be held on February 8, 2024. However, the shadow of terrorism is hovering over this election. Even before voting, attacks on election candidates have increased and they are being killed. The latest case has come in Peshawar, where a candidate was shot dead while campaigning for the general elections on Wednesday. The police have said that this incident may raise concern among political leaders. The February 8 elections could be threatened by increasing terrorist attacks.

Candidates were campaigning from house to house.

Three people, including Malik Kaleemullah, an independent candidate for the provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, were killed on Wednesday, according to Reuters. North Waziristan police chief Rohan Zeib Khan told Reuters that Kaleemullah was going from house to house when he was attacked. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack since the incident.

Nawaz Sharif’s leader was also attacked

During the general elections, former prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif’s leader was also attacked. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) National Assembly candidate Mir Aslam Bilidi was seriously injured in an armed attack in Balochistan, southwestern province of Pakistan.

Election under the shadow of terrorism

After a long political crisis and delays, general elections in Pakistan have been announced to be held on February 8. Pakistan, a country of about 240 million people, is a hotbed of Islamist terrorists who demand stricter laws. Terrorist organizations have intensified attacks since the end of 2022 when the ceasefire agreement with the government of Pakistan was abrogated.
