On 16 January at the Australian Open 2024, Indian tennis star Sumit Nagal scored the biggest win of his career by defeating world number 27 Alexander Boblik in the first round. Sumit Nagal is currently the number 1 tennis player in India. Nagal has become the first Indian tennis player since Ramesh Krishnan in 1989 to defeat a seeded player in Grand Slam history. Along with this, Sumit also credits his win to India’s superstar cricketer Virat Kohli, whose foundation has also helped him a lot.

I sometimes talk to Kohli.

“I talk to him sometimes,” Sumit Nagal said about Virat Kohli in his statement on Sony Sports after defeating Alexander Bulik at the Australian Open 2024. I am also a part of its foundation. I would like to thank them for the support I have received over the years. Do you know which Indian would rather not watch cricket? I follow cricket and watch it whenever I get a chance. Let us tell you that Nagal is a part of Virat Kohli’s foundation and in the year 2019, he had told in a statement how he got help in difficult times. At that time, Nagal did not have enough money to even book a flight ticket to participate in the tournament.

The past year has been very mixed for me.

Sumit Nagal meanwhile added in his statement that the last 12 to 18 months have been very mixed for me. Bad because I was injured and I also got to learn a lot during that break. When I returned to the tennis court after the injury, I felt better and more experienced than before and I think I was able to show that on the court as well. Sumit defeated Alexander Boblik in three sets 6-4, 6-2 and 7-6.
