New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress in the Rajya Sabha, using a letter from the country’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, as a weapon. Targeting the Congress, PM Modi said, ‘Nehruji used to say that if SC/ST, OBC get reservation in jobs, the level of government work will go down. This is the root of what these figures count for today. If he had joined the government at that time, he would have progressed after the promotion and would have reached here today.

‘Nehru wrote a letter to the Chief Ministers’

PM Modi said, ‘Once Nehruji wrote a letter to the Chief Minister. It was written in the letter that I don’t like any reservation and especially not reservation in job. I am against any step that promotes inefficiency, leading to second-rate standards. On this basis I say that the Congress is innately opposed to reservation. Congress which did not give full reservation to OBCs, never gave reservation to the common poor, now it is teaching us about social justice and teaching us a lesson.

‘Injustice done to our past’

Speaking on the motion of thanks for the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha, the Prime Minister said, ‘Congress, which did not consider Baba Sahib worthy of awarding Bharat Ratna, kept awarding Bharat Ratna only to his family. Those who have no guarantee as a leader are questioning Modi’s guarantee. ‘Congress spread the narrative, which resulted in people who believed in Indian culture and values being looked down upon. Thus injustice was done to our past. The world knows very well where his leadership was.

‘I request you to get 40 seats’

PM Modi said that even today these people are avoiding speaking the local language, the talk of self-reliant India does not come out of their mouths. He said, ‘When someone says make in India, rats start running in his stomach. The challenge before you from West Bengal is that the Congress will not cross the 40 mark (in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections). I wish you can get 40 seats.
