In his letter, Rahul Gandhi wrote, I am writing to you about the dire plight of MREGS (MNREGA) workers in West Bengal and their continuous fight for justice. My journey under Bharat Jodo New Yatra is passing through West Bengal. Meanwhile, a delegation of MGNREGA workers from the West Bengal Khela Mazdoor Samiti apprised me of these issues. Rahul Gandhi said that lakhs of brothers and sisters have lost their jobs since March 2022 due to central funding of MNREGA.
This demand of MGNREGA workers
In his letter, Rahul Gandhi wrote to PM Modi and said, “I have been told that many workers have not been paid for their work since 2021 due to central funds being stopped.” Apart from this, the number of families getting jobs under MGNREGA has also drastically reduced. In 2021-22, 75 lakh families got employment under MNREGA, which has reduced to 8000 in 2023-24. The worst impact of this decline has been seen on the poor, women, SC and ST categories.
