Unemployment in urban areas declines, with the unemployment rate falling to 6.5 percent in the October-December quarter.

Unemployment rate: Good news for Modi government. The unemployment rate has decreased in the urban areas of the country. Between October-December 2022 and October-December 2023, the unemployment rate among people aged 15+ has decreased from 7.2% to 6.5%. Labor force participation in urban areas has also increased during this period.

NSSO (National Sample Survey Office) has released the Periodic Labor Force Survey Bulletin for the quarter of October-December 2023. According to this data, the unemployment rate among people above 15 years of age in urban areas decreased from 7.2 percent to 6.5 percent during October-December 2023 as compared to October-December 2022 quarter. The unemployment rate among men has decreased from 6.5 percent to 5.8 percent and among women it has decreased from 9.6 percent to 8.6 percent.

According to the data, the lobar force participation rate (LFPR) among those living in urban areas is increasing and it has increased from 48.2 percent to 49.9 percent among people over 15 years of age. Female labor force participation has also increased during this period. Among women, it has increased from 22.3 percent to 25 percent.

During this period, the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) among people above 15 years of age has been increasing. It has increased from 44.7 percent in October-December 2022 to 46.6 percent in October-December 2023. In males it has increased from 68.6% to 69.8% and in females it has increased from 20.2% to 22.9%.

In this survey, NSO mainly targets urban areas and looks at the proportion of working population, labor force participation rate, unemployment rate. The survey was conducted between October-December 2023 among 169,209 people in 44,544 households in 5,697 UFS blocks.
