New Delhi: Chandigarh mayoral election is in news across the country as the Supreme Court has declared Aam Aadmi Party candidate Kuldeep Kumar as the winner of Chandigarh mayoral election and annulled BJP candidate Manoj Sonkar’s victory. Apart from this notice has also been given to the Election Officer (Returning Officer). The Supreme Court has said that the officer lied. This officer’s name is Anil Masih and now people want to know why he made this mistake.

Who is Anil Masih?

Anil Masih is 53 years old. He is being accused of irregularities in the Chandigarh mayoral election. He too had joined the BJP a few years ago and was hoping to get a ticket from Ward 13 in the 2021 Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections. However, this did not happen. But the BJP nominated him for the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation the following year. In the year 2021, the BJP also made him the General Secretary of the Minority Front.

What’s the whole deal?

Actually, voting for the election of the mayor in Chandigarh was held on January 30. In which BJP’s Manoj Sonkar got 16 votes and AAP-Congress joint candidate Kuldeep Kumar got 12 votes. Meanwhile, Returning Officer Anil Masih declared 8 votes invalid.

When the matter came up, Congress and AAP went to the Supreme Court. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud held a hearing on February 5 and took a tough line on Anil Masih. Anil Masih has also admitted in the court that he made a cross mark in the ballot paper.

How did the election go wrong?

The total number of councilors in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is 36. 19 votes are needed to win the post of mayor. In such a situation, your candidate got 12 votes and 8 votes were declared invalid. If the votes had not been declared invalid, the AAP candidate would have got 20 votes and would have won.
