A court in Haryana’s Rohtak on Friday sentenced a former wrestling coach to death for killing six people, including a four-year-old child, in February 2021. Additional District and Sessions Judge Gagan Geet Kaur convicted Sukhwinder under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including Sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) and the Arms Act and fined him Rs 1.26 lakh. What’s the whole deal?

According to police, Sukhwinder, a resident of Baroda village in Sonepat district, shot dead Manoj Malik, his wife Sakshi Malik and son Sartaj, wrestling coaches Satish Kumar and Pradeep Malik and wrestler Pooja on February 12, 2021. Another person, Amarjit, was injured during the incident which took place at a boating site adjacent to a private college in Rohtak, police said. The police had then said that Sukhwinder had committed the crime in anger after his services were terminated due to several complaints against him.

According to a report, a police officer said that Sukhwinder Singh hatched the murder plot when Pehlwan Pooja, a victim, lodged a complaint against him. Following the complaint, Amarjit Dalal fired Singh from his job as wrestling coach at Mehr Singh Akhara in Rohtak. Coach Manoj Malik asked Singh in 2021 to stop coming to the field. Sukhwinder then planned the murder. Singh first hit coach Pradeep. He then shoots Manoj and Satish and then he also kills Sakshi Malik, Pooja and Sakshi’s son. The officer added that Singh killed three coaches in a room of the Akhara. While in the other room, he killed two women and a child and then closed the door of the room. Sukhwinder Singh was arrested from Delhi on February 13, a day after the incident.

What did the court say?

The court in its order said, “This case falls into the rarest category. In such circumstances, this court has no option but to award death sentence instead of life imprisonment. The judge said that until the Punjab and Haryana High Court confirms the death sentence, the sentence will not be carried out. (language)
