Washington: After the collapse of the mandate in Pakistan, the way for the formation of a coalition government is almost clear, but the US lawmakers have raised their voice for not recognizing this government. US lawmakers say the new government in Pakistan should not recognize the US just yet. A group of influential lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Party in the US have written a letter to President Joe Biden citing ‘strong evidence’ of rigging in recent elections in Pakistan. In its letter, the group demanded that Pakistan’s new government should not be recognized until a transparent and credible investigation is conducted.

This group also includes Muslim MPs. Allegations of massive rigging have been made in Pakistan’s February 8 general elections. The mandate was broken in the election results. Independent candidates supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan won more than 90 seats in the 266-member National Assembly. Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Muslim League-N won 75 seats and former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won 54 seats. Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan won 17 seats.

For this reason wrote a letter to President Biden

In a joint letter to President Biden and US Secretary of State Anthony Blanken, the lawmakers have expressed concern over pre- and post-voting rigging in Pakistan’s recent parliamentary elections. He has urged the US Congress to withhold recognition of Pakistan’s new government until a transparent and credible investigation into election meddling is conducted. “Given the strong evidence of election fraud, we urge you to wait for a full, transparent and credible investigation before recognizing Pakistan’s new government,” the US lawmakers said. It can harm the democratic will of the Pakistani authorities and the Pakistani people. The letter is also signed by Indian-origin Congress member Pramila Jaipal. (language)
