Preparations for IPL 2024 are underway in India. Meanwhile, there is a vacancy for a selector in the BCCI. For which the names of three former players are coming up. Former India spinner Nikhil Chopra, Delhi veteran Mithan Minhas and current junior selector Krishna Mohan are in the race to become BCCI selectors of the senior national team. The BCCI had released applications for a post on the five-member selection panel in January.

This position has been vacant for a long time.

At present West Zone is represented by two persons Salil Ankula and Chairman Ajit Agarkar. Ankula is likely to be dropped to make way for a selector from the Northern Territory, who is not represented in the panel following Chetan Sharma’s resignation. Former Punjab cricketer Mohan, who is part of the junior selection panel from September 2021, is among the candidates who have applied for the job. Former Indian wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra has also submitted his claim. The deadline for applications was January 25 but with the IPL starting on Friday, the board still has plenty of time to fill the vacancy.

What experience is required to become a selector?

The Cricket Advisory Committee headed by Ashok Malhotra will interview the shortlisted candidates in the near future. A BCCI source said some strong candidates are in the running and they include Mithan, Chopra and Mohan. Mithan played 157 first-class matches for Delhi and was a regular in the IPL from 2010 to 2014. Recently, R Ashwin opened up about Mithan’s special abilities with the bat ahead of his 100th Test in Dharamsala. Ratra, a Level 3 coach, was with the A team on the tour of South Africa last year. Chopra, who played one Test and 39 ODIs for India, is now a well-known commentator. Applicant must have played 7 Tests or 30 First Class matches. Candidates with experience of 10 ODIs or 20 First Class matches may also be considered.
