Singapore: Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday dismissed China’s repeated claims over Arunachal Pradesh as ‘ridiculous’. Jaishankar said that this border state is a “natural part of India”. In his public comments on China’s frequent claims to Arunachal and China’s opposition to visits by Indian leaders to the state, Jaishankar said it was not a new issue.

‘Claims null and void’

“This is not a new issue,” said S Jaishankar in response to a question on the Arunachal issue after delivering a lecture at the prestigious NUS Institute of South Asian Studies here. I mean China has claimed, it has repeated its claim. These claims were ridiculous from the beginning and are still ridiculous today.” Jaishankar asserted that Arunachal Pradesh was a “natural part of India”. “So, I think we’ve been very clear on that and we’ve taken a consistent position,” he said. I think you know this is something that is part of the ongoing border negotiations.

‘baseless claims made’

Jaishankar’s comments came a few days after the Ministry of External Affairs rejected China’s Defense Ministry statement. “We have taken note of the comments made by the spokesperson of China’s Ministry of Defense, which has made absurd claims about the territory of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

‘Arunachal is an integral part of India’

“Repeating baseless arguments in this regard does not justify such a claim,” the ministry said in a statement. Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be an integral part of India. Its people will continue to benefit from our development programs and infrastructure projects.” Earlier, China’s foreign ministry had objected to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh. language
