The prices are likely to fall due to the extension of the ban on export of onions by the government. Keeping this in mind, the government has taken a major decision in the interest of farmers. The government said on Tuesday that it will start procurement of 5 lakh tonnes of rabi onion in the next two to three days. Let us tell you that the ban on onion export has been extended till further orders. Earlier it was supposed to end on March 31.

According to a report by news agency PTI, Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh told reporters that we want to assure farmers that their concerns will be taken care of. We will start procurement of five lakh tonnes of rabi (winter) crop in next 2-3 days to maintain buffer stock.

Traders will be affected.

Singh added that the ban on onion exports is not affecting farmers but traders, as average market (wholesale) prices in Maharashtra are Rs 13-15 per kg, almost double the previous year’s level. . He said that even if the prices fall, he will protect the interests of the farmers. The government generally buys onions for buffer stock at prevailing market rates. However, if prices fall below the cost of production, the government will ensure that at least the farmers’ expenses are met. In the year 2023-24, the government procured 6.4 lakh tonnes of onion (both Rabi and Kharif crops) for buffer stock at an average rate of Rs 17 per kg.

Onion production is expected to decline.

Rabi onion production is estimated to decline by 20 per cent to 190.5 lakh tonnes in the 2023-24 (July-June) season from 23.7 lakh tonnes in the same period a year ago, according to agriculture ministry data. Rabi onion is important for onion availability in the country as it contributes 72-75% of the annual production. Rabi onion is also important to ensure availability of onion throughout the year as it has a better shelf life than Kharif (summer) onion and can be stored for supply till November-December.
