Retail Inflation Rate: India’s retail inflation hits 9-month low The government has released retail inflation data for March. Retail inflation eased to 4.85 percent in March, down from 5.09 percent in February. On April 12, the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation released the Retail Inflation Rate. According to the report, the rate of retail inflation was the lowest since June 2023. It was 4.81 percent in June last year.

Last week, on April 5, the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy released its latest inflation data, leaving the policy repo rate unchanged. In the Reserve Bank’s monetary policy, the policy repo rate has been kept at 6.5 percent for the seventh consecutive time. According to the Central Bank’s forecast, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is seen at 4.5 percent this fiscal year.

The rate of inflation of food items also decreased

Retail inflation eased to a nine-month low of 4.85 percent in March on soft food prices. This information is given in the official data released on Friday. Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation was 5.09 percent in February, compared to 5.66 percent in March 2023.

Normal monsoon expected

The government has mandated the Reserve Bank to limit retail inflation to four percent (plus or minus two percent). The Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee takes into account retail inflation data while deciding policy rates. Expecting a normal monsoon this year, the central bank has estimated retail inflation at 4.5 percent for the current fiscal year. The RBI has estimated retail inflation at 4.9 percent in the April-June quarter and 3.8 percent in the September quarter.
