Kathmandu: A large number of devotees gathered in Nepal on the occasion of Mahashivratri on Friday. Devotees from Nepal and India continued to flock to the Pashupatinath temple to worship Lord Shiva. The slogans of Har Har Mahadev and Bam Bole kept echoing since morning. According to an estimate, about one million devotees visited Lord Mahadev at the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal on the Mahashivratri festival. The officers provided this information. Thousands of devotees lined up for hours from early morning carrying flowers, incense, rice and other offerings for darshan of the historic Shivling at the Pashupatinath temple.

Lord Shiva or Mahadeva is considered one of the trinity responsible for the disintegration of the world during Pralaya. Mahasvaratri is known as the day when Shiva was born. Officials of the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT), which is responsible for managing the temple’s affairs, estimate that around one million devotees will visit the temple from dawn to dusk on Mahashivratri. About 10 percent of the devotees are expected to come from different parts of India. Around 3000 saints, including Naga Baba, visit the temple premises to worship Lord Pashupati during this festival.

The Pashupatinath temple is decorated with colorful lights and garlands of flowers.

The Himalayas are known as the abode of Lord Shiva and Nepal has a large number of Shivaites, whose main deity is Lord Shiva. To celebrate Shivaratri, people light bonfires and prepare sweets and other food items at night in homes, around temples and at street intersections. Pashupatinath Temple is decorated with colorful lights and garlands of flowers during the festival. PADT arranged free food, tea and water for thousands of sadhus from Nepal and India. (language)
