Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Saturday recalled a recent incident where he was subjected to ‘trolling’ and ‘horrendous’ abuse just for adjusting his sitting position during a hearing. Addressing the Biennial Conference of Judicial Officers in Bengaluru, CJI Chandrachud said, “Just four or five days ago, when I was hearing a case, I had a slight pain in my back, so that’s all I did.” That I put my elbow on myself. In court, the chair and I switched places on the chair.

The CJI said that some social media users called him arrogant and claimed that he stood in the middle of an important debate in the court. What he didn’t tell you was that he changed his position in the chair. It might be a little harsh to judge a 24-year-old on what I’ve done. I did not leave the court. I just changed my status but I have been subjected to terrible abuse, trolling. Despite the inappropriate response, Chief Justice Chandrachud expressed confidence in the determination of the judiciary to serve the common citizens diligently. He said that our shoulders are very broad and common citizens have full faith in our work.

Chandrachud commented on the event stressing the need for stress management and ensuring work-life balance for judicial officers, which was one of the themes of the two-day conference. Sometimes he goes overboard in his dealings with us as judges. As the Chief Justice of India, I see many lawyers and litigants overstepping their bounds while speaking to us in court.
